Several states are now considering new pieces of legislation designed to make online match dating sites safer. Bills are pending in Connecticut and Texas that would provide dating site users with more information.

These bills won't go as far as requiring sites to screen users, but users would be reminded not to provide any identifying information on their profiles and notified whether the site conducts background checks on new users. Some critics of screening point out that it might not be effective, since many rapists are not previously convicted sex offenders. It may have the opposite effect of lulling users into a false sense of security. So it's hard to tell if the states' proposed measures would do any more to protect people who use online dating sites form potential sexual assault.
