I’ve always considered him the one that got away. Cut to present day. I moved back home, where Matt lives, about a year ago. I’ve always thought there might be a chance I’d bump into him, or maybe I’d message him to see if he’d like to meet and catch up. That happened this past weekend. I made plans to go out with a good friend of mine to our old college bar. We walk in and as soon as Matt sees me, his face just lights up. He did a double take, then give me the biggest, warmest, most awesome hug, picking me up off the ground. He says he can’t believe I’m there, and how great it is to see me. He just kept repeating how he couldn’t believe I was there, standing in front of him. He gushes that he loves keeping up with me over Facebook, and has thought about me often over the years. He tells me his friends won’t believe that he saw me (?!). There’s a tid bit I need to add: about 5 years ago, I was home visiting for the holidays and I sent him a message asking if he’d want to meet up and have a couple of drinks, and that I’d love to catch up. After agreeing to meet me, he completely stood me up. No apology for not making it, nothing. So after that, I figured I’d never speak with him again and that was that. So when Matt says he can’t believe it’s been 10 years since we’ve seen each other, I mention that night five years ago when he stood me up.
