The first home I purchased was 690 square feet, 2 bedroom, 1 bath. My ex-husband and I lived there with our son and one largish dog. It was cramped, but I’d always lived in small spaces so it wasn’t that tricky for me. My ex, on the other hand, came from sprawling suburbia and didn’t quite know what to do with himself. Our biggest issues were: 1) my ex was terrible at picking up after himself and 2) our son was a baby/todder which meant we had things like jumpers and high chairs and strollers (oh my!) to deal with on top of everything else. My motto was “a place for everything and everything in it’s place.” Keeping on top of clutter, as you say, was key. I was also extremely selective with my purchases. With two closests that were literally only 3 feet wide, ANY new article of clothing was a trade (one new article in, one old article donated). No exceptions. And I culled through all of our belongings when we moved in, getting rid of all duplicates and items that weren’t really necessary (did I really need that rice cooker, or would an existing sauce pan do the trick)?

Now I’m living in 1000 sq/ft with The Man, a 10-year-old boy, and a 10-month-old baby, 2 bedrooms + a small office (which serves as The Baby’s room), 1 bath. Again, it’s fine from my perspective… but The Man comes from OK and TX where land (and the houses on them) is cheaper and bigger. Luckily there’s a basement here that’s not livable (yet), but serves as adequate overflow for extra stuff. For now we’re doing okay (though I’m still trying to train The Man to NOT buy the largest size of everything – hello 36 rolls of paper towels, what am I going to do with you?), but we’re going to have to find space for The Man’s two daughters to visit and that we’ll be a challenge. But I’m not (too) worried. My grandmother found a way to house 7 kids AND her father-in-law in a 2-bedroom house. If they can do *that*, we can do this!
